Permits

Permits are required for lots of things: buildings, docks (yes, docks: from Parks Canada; remember you are on a lake that is part of the Rideau Canal), operating a motor boat requires an operator's permit.  See "Links" for help.

But it is most important that you know that: burning at any time requires a permit and other than a small campfire, you cannot burn between 8am-6pm April 1 to October 31.

Garbage & Recycling

It's complicated so your best bet is to refer to the very useful Rideau Lakes Township calendar or website!  But as a minimum you need to know that, from the Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving, garbage and recycling is picked up at the end of your driveway on Monday morning (usually around 8am).  Be kind to your neighbours: do not put out your garbage until early Monday morning...marauding raccoons (or bears) will make a mess of it if it is out too long before pick-up.

At other times of the year, pick up is in the box at the end of the road (if the box is locked, do not leave anything beside it....a locked box means pick up is at the end of the driveway).  All garbage must be in clear plastic bags with a tag that can be purchased at various places around the Township (see the website or calendar).

Recycling must be in blue bags (no tag required) and one week is fiber and one week is "containers"...this is where you really must check the calendar or website.  Calendars are available in various locations including the Elgin Library.

911 Service

OPOC is in a 911 emergency service area.  To help emergency officials locate you, you should have readily available your location.  Use this form to help your children, guests or others who might not know how to describe where your cottage is.  You never know...you could be the emergency!
